Future Plans

Imagine for a moment…a Christian, faith-based, therapeutic community of 300+ men… working a comprehensive recovery program to overcome drug addiction, homelessness and poverty. Imagine that these men have access to all the resources needed to give them the best chance at long-term success. Imagine that all these resources are available in newly renovated facilities on the 1000 block of East Baltimore Street. Imagine that a compassionate, professional, Christian staff guides this community. And…imagine Helping Up Mission touching an extended family of over 4000 people each year.

During the next 3-5 years, Mission leadership will be focused on expanding and renovating Mission facilities (Capital Campaign) …and adding depth to the services currently provided to program members and graduates.

Last December, Helping Up Mission celebrated the opening of its new 50-bed Transitional Housing facility called “House of Freedom.”

Not long after the opening of House of Freedom, 1023 E. Baltimore Street was acquired, giving the Mission ownership of the entire 1000 block of East Baltimore Street. Architects are currently working on renovations to the remaining buildings. Renovations include a spacious commercial kitchen, a dining hall that seat 300 comfortably, a new chapel, living space for the 210 men in the Mission’s Spiritual Recovery Program, and a new dormitory for 50 Emergency Overnight Guests.

The Mission’s Strategic Plan calls for expanding and adding depth to current Mission programs. Fulfilling this goal will involve strengthening current staff through training and development…and adding new staff that will allow us to better serve the needs of our constituents and provide the most comprehensive recovery services in the state of Maryland. The following staff has been or will be hired during the next 3-5 years:

  • Certified Addictions Counselors to oversee daily 12-step meetings and provide addictions counseling

  • Pastoral Counselors to conduct daily one-on-one and small group counseling, and some discipleship teaching

  • Vocational Counselor to work with Life Prep, Graduates, and Alumni in training and securing of full-time and temporary jobs; also a job coach

  • Alumni/Community Support Administrator to oversee the Alumni Association as well as coordinate with non-graduates in the community

  • Social Workers/Case Workers to work directly with Program members and support them in legal, financial, and personal matters

  • Medical Professional (at least an RN) to operate as a daily “school nurse” and support the outside medical services of our program men

  • Psychologist to provide psychological counseling to Program members

  • Education Director

In addition, Helping Up Mission’s future plans include:

  • Providing a safe community for alumni beyond transitional housing…that will allow them to continue moving toward independence

  • Expanding the Mission’s professional volunteer network to engage more community organizations in the work of the Mission

  • Developing new social entrepreneurial business enterprises

The vision of Helping Up Mission is to see “Christ rebuild the character of every person who completes our Spiritual Recovery Program -- enabling them to maintain a personal walk with Christ; remain free from the power of addictions, and contribute to their family, church, and community.” With the help of donors like you…this vision will become a reality!
