Overview
Most of the men we serve at Helping
Up Mission are homeless…and 85% are addicted to drugs and/or
alcohol. Most studies, including research done by The Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), list addiction
among the primary factors leading to homelessness. Other factors include
poverty, affordable housing, disability, untreated mental illness,
co-occurring disorders, domestic violence, chronic or unexpected health
care expenses, release from incarceration, “aging out”
of youth systems such as foster care, divorce or separation.
To address these issues, Helping
Up Mission strives to treat the whole person…body, mind and
spirit. Thus our Mission Statement reads: Helping Up Mission provides
hope to the homeless through programs that meet their individual
physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Our Vision
is to see “Christ rebuild the character of every person who
completes our Spiritual Recovery program -- enabling them to maintain
a personal walk with Christ, remain free from addictions, and contribute
to their family, church, and community.
Helping
Up Mission Results
Each year, Helping Up Mission conducts
a Follow-Up Study on Graduates of the one-year Spiritual Recovery
Program. Following is a sampling of information obtained from the
most recent study (completed April 8, 2005). Since these statistics
focus solely on graduates, they do not account for men who left
the program early, but are doing well in their recovery. (Highest
percentages listed)
