What Others Say About HUM

Public Officals

"I’ve visited Helping Up Mission, and I’ve talked with those they care for. For the poor and homeless, the Mission can be the difference between having shelter and living on the street; between treating an illness and allowing it to get worse; between being able to pay bills and having adequate food and shelter. Faith-based programs like Helping Up Mission are a vital link in our state’s efforts to provide even the most basic health and human services to needy men, women and children. I know our support can really make a difference.”
  - Governor Robert L. Ehrlich

“Visiting Baltimore’s Helping Up Mission convinced me that the work they do is making an important contribution to our state. The Mission’s programs offer desperate and homeless people crucial opportunities to change their lives through job training, counseling, education, substance abuse treatment, and other programs. These programs enable our most needy to discover and develop their talents and to acquire the skills they need to become self-reliant, contributing members of society.”
- Maryland Comptroller William Donald Schaefer

"Helping Up Mission is a model of the comprehensive and collaborative efforts needed to adequately address and end homelessness in Baltimore City.  Helping Up Mission's approach of helping others help themselves is more sustainable and deals with homelessness over the long term."
- Baltimore City Mayor Sheila Dixon

"The Helping Up Mission epitomizes our call to be our brother's and sister's keeper. Not only does it extend a helping hand, but aids
people in becoming empowered to control their own lives and look to the future for hope."
– Baltimore City Comptroller Joan Pratt

Volunteers and Donors

"Volunteering at Helping Up Mission has impacted our lives greatly. Every time we visit the Mission, we witness the power of God transforming lives. We have learned the power of drug addiction and the strength it takes to break its grip. But, when the Lord is at the center of the person's recovery, it is possible to win the battle."
- Carter and Maureen Warfield (Ellicott City, MD)

“I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity I have been given to volunteer at the Mission. It has been an incredible year. I don't think I have ever worked in a place that was this wild in my life! My faith has grown tremendously as I have watched God miraculously meets the needs of the men in the program. It has been a privilege to serve at the Mission.”
- Dr. Mary Lashley (Professor of Nursing, Towson University)

"Shortly after I moved to Baltimore in 2002, a friend told me about Helping Up Mission. I visited the Mission to drop off some clothes… and stayed for a tour and orientation. I wound up in a 20-minute conversation with a gentleman in the Spiritual Recovery Program. That conversation began a blessing in my life that continues today. I have seen God use staff and volunteers to change lives of men in ways I never considered possible. God's word says it best in Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." If you have a heart to serve, I highly recommend you drop off a load of clothes and visit the Development Office to learn more about the Mission. It will change your life!"
- Robert Palmer (HUM Volunteer)

“Thank you for providing a place for our group to work during our two week missions trip. We were so blessed by your Mission and the things that happen there. Our students were touched by the conversations they had with your men. I just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed working with Helping Up Mission. God’s blessings on the shelter and on you!”

– Youth Leader, Hereford Church of the Nazarene (Hereford, TX)

“We really appreciate the chance we had to come and be a part of your ministry. Many, if not most, of our students sited our time at the Mission as one of their favorite moments on choir tour where they really worshipped God in truth and spirit and connected with the audience. I think this will go down as one of the most meaningful weeks of our lives.
- Youth Choir Director, West End Assembly of God (Richmond, VA)

“I wanted to thank you for everything you did for my class while we were in Baltimore. I wasn’t expecting to have fun, but as it turns out, this was my favorite thing we did as a class all year. I would come back in a heartbeat. All of my friends feel the same way!”
- Student, Belvue School (McVeytown, PA)
